EMEA MOPS diary by Zoe Forman

Day to day roles, tasks, challenges managing multiple languages as a Marketing Operations Manager

Is there a film or tv series that REFLECTS your role?

discovery+ gold rush for me

What does my MOPS career and Discovery’s Gold Rush TV series have in common apart from 15 years/series?

Both Gold mining and Marketing operations involve a combination of strategy, analysis, and adaptability to achieve success.

Here are the similarities I see:

1. Problem-Solving

   •   Gold Rush: Miners constantly face unexpected challenges like equipment breakdowns or harsh weather, requiring innovative and quick solutions to keep the operation running.

   •   Marketing Operations: Professionals must solve issues like campaign underperformance or data discrepancies, using logic or creative approaches and tools to optimise results.

2. Logic and Strategy

   •   Gold Rush: Decisions about where to mine or how to allocate resources are based on logical analysis of terrain, historical data, and probabilities.

   •   Marketing Operations: Planning campaigns or workflows involves strategic thinking, analysing customer data, and figuring out the most effective use of resources.

3. Luck as a Factor

   •   Gold Rush: Despite thorough planning, finding gold often involves an element of luck, as even the best-laid plans can’t guarantee success.

   •   Marketing Operations: Market trends and consumer behaviour can shift unpredictably, and sometimes, a campaign’s success hinges on timing or unforeseen circumstances.

4. Multiple Options

   •   Gold Rush: Miners often have several sites or methods to choose from and must weigh the risks and rewards of each.

   •   Marketing Operations: Teams evaluate multiple strategies, platforms, or channels to identify the most effective approach for achieving objectives.

5. Reading the Landscape

   •   Gold Rush: Success depends on interpreting the land’s features to predict where gold might be.

   •   Marketing Operations: Understanding the competitive landscape and customer behaviour is critical for creating effective campaigns.

6. Analysis and Adaptation

   •   Gold Rush: Continuous monitoring of results (gold yield) informs whether to stay or move on to another site.

   •   Marketing Operations: Data analysis drives decisions, helping marketers refine strategies and allocate budgets to maximise ROI.

Community, collaboration, technology & tools, mindset, RELATIONSHIPS and leadership are all key to both mops and gold mining.

In both fields, success relies on a blend of expertise, intuition, and resilience in the face of uncertainty whether digging dirt for gold or digging through data for enhanced personalisation.
